If chess isn’t available (or convenient) at your school, that doesn’t mean your child has to miss out. Instead, they can join us for weekend chess classes, designed for kindergarteners and primary school kids ages 4 and up.
There isn't an age limit on chess or the skills it can develop, and as life gets busier we forget the benefits chess can offer in favour of other things. As such, we offer programs for retirees and aged cares that creates an outlet for this interest.
Do you want your child to experience the benefits of learning chess while still having fun along the way?
At Chess Mates, our chess classes for kids focus on fun, enjoyment, and cooperation, not performance and competition.
Our attentive teachers will help your child learn and build upon the fundamentals of chess, while also using chess as a vehicle for teaching math skills, social skills, and emotional intelligence in an interactive and cooperative environment.
Chess Mates offers chess classes for kids ages 3 and up.
Unlike many chess programs, we make chess fun. Chess Mates parents regularly exclaim over how engaged their kids are and how they love playing chess at home!
The Benefits Of Chess!
It’s been shown that learning to play chess from age 3 can improve a child’s overall performance at school by nearly 20% compared to children who have not learnt chess. In other words, learning chess helps your child to leap ahead of their peers at school.
Chess classes help your child improve their attention span, develop emotional intelligence, make friends, prepare to start school, and have fun… all at the same time.
Doesn’t your child deserve that sort of head-start? To learn more about the specific benefits of chess classes for kids, read our “Why Chess?” page

How We Teach Chess For Kids
At Chess Mates, we teach chess classes for kids aged 2 to 10 in Brisbane and south-east Queensland.
Your child is taught in a fun and engaging environment, with creative storytelling, songs, and physical movement. For older children, we focus on teaching chess with storytelling, chess puzzles, and games of chess. We also teach planning skills as they learn to think one step ahead, and use the technology they are familiar and comfortable with to aid in their learning.
Chess Mates chess classes are about learning, not just facilitating games of chess. Nor do we focus on winning. Instead, we teach about winning and losing in a supportive environment, so your child can learn to deal with both situations emotionally. We focus on how chess can be fun and help your child make new friends.
All our teachers have current Blue Cards for working with children. Classes are capped at 6 kids in childcare centres. In schools, we have 10 students per teacher, so your child receives the individual attention they deserve, while also learning and practising social skills, and making new friends.
For kids aged 2 to 3-and-a-half, classes go for 20 minutes. Other childcare classes run for 30 minutes, while school classes are 30 to 45 minutes in length. At the end of each term, you receive feedback on your child’s progress and learning.
Give Your Child Their Best Start!
Our kids love learning chess.Your child will too. We invite all children to join us for a trial lesson so they can see what learning chess is like.We look forward to helping your child to enjoy their best possible start, and to welcoming you to our family chess community. What the teachers say
“We have had The Leaps Chess Class program for the past 6 months and the children have found it fun and look forward to “The Chess Man” coming each week. The children are learning so much about the game and really enjoy the fact that the class is so interactive. We have had nothing but positive feedback from parents and look forward to continuing to offer the program at the centre.”
Monique Loskill, Director at Mother Duck Wynnum
“Our children look forward to chess classes every week. We have found that our children enjoy playing chess so much that we have created a space for a chess board in our classroom. They have now become mentors to their friends as they pass on the knowledge that they gain to their peers and also their teachers.”
Rebecca, Childcare Teacher
“The classes are taking off really well at the other centres and I think is suitable for children 3 years and older through to school age children ( in particular). My 3 older children are currently participating in the class. Ash gives an in-depth feedback regarding the children’s progress after the classes. The kids love the classes and can’t stop talking about it at home. Within 2 weeks they were sitting down playing games of chess together.”
Shan Kuo, Avenues Licensee
I just wanted to thank you guys so much for the wonderful chess mates incursion you provided for us. The younger children enjoyed the creative way you taught them through storytelling, games and songs while the older children appreciated the strategies, challenges and humour. Looking forward to having you back for the upcoming vacation care period.
